Skipper Butterfly.
Barbo, Coeliades, Kedestes, Metsisella, Platylesches and others.

Family: Hesperiidae

Average Size: 3cm Wingspan

Wings are brown with yellow or white markings. They have broad bodies, the feelers are curved or hooked at their ends.

A number of the 136 species are widespread, however, most are restricted to the eastern or north eastern parts of Southern Africa.

They have a fast darting flight, frequently seetling on vegetation or on the ground. Males patrol territories on hill tops.

This image was taken in the forests at Houtbosdorp. The area is on the escarpment between the lowveld and the highveld. There are many species of butterfly in the region and this shot was taken with the Videocam from about 12 inches. I have no idea what the other insect is in the picture and to be very honest, I only saw it once I downloaded the picture. I tried most of the morning to get a butterfly shot and this one was about the best. Most of them just kept flying as such. This one actually lay still for about 4 shots before taking off again.
Hope you guys like my first butterfly post.

Very nice job Willie, I love the composition and the colours, interesting butterfly. I think it could do with a little sharpening - I have posted a WS to shoe you. Great work.

It also looks like a little froghopper has got in the frame.

Hallo Willie!

Thanks for hope that summer will come some day!

Nice shot Willie,
Excellent details, colours and clarity.
The ridges in the leaf add a little extra to the shot.
Thanks for posting

Nice composition, Willie. The leafes look like a highway crossroad. I see three subjects here, the two bugs, and the BG, interesting by itself. Well done.

Willie, this is really great. A colorful and nice composition.

These two creatures are doing great here.

I had a doubt: on your note, it's written f/4.0, but right below the photo the photo it's written f/1. Do you know why?

Kind regards and congratulations.

Very good shot and interesting note. Beautiful butterfly. Good job.

Great detail from your cam again. Skippers are very active and getting a shot is lucky, never mind four. Our skippers don't usually spread their wings like this, they usually keep them half folded, ready to take off. Great composition on this broad leaf/palm frond.

Congratulations for having the patience to photograph this butterfly. I'm happy it held still long enough for you to get this great shot, since you shared it with all of us. Just beautiful colors, sharpness, etc.
