[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note [French]
This friendly animal is a tree hyrax. As you can imagine seeing it, it is genetically a fairly close relative of the elephant.
Climber very skillful but awkward on the ground, it is most active at night, but this photo proves that it is not exclusively nocturnal. It is an omnivorous animal.
It is smaller than its cousin the rock hyrax (25-30 cm and 2-5 kg).
It is found in the south-eastern Africa, Congo and Angola.
One say that observations are rare outside of the mountains (Kilimanjaro and Meru), but the group I observed was really not shy. It is said that their nocturnal cry is "bloodcurdling", but I was asleep ...
Hint accrediting kinship with very large animals: the female gives birth to a single young after 8 months of gestation, which may be unique for an animal of this size.
Although inspiring sympathy, this animal has a big flaw (for the photographer): it moves all the time!
