While on a mini weekend safari in the Lake Mburo National Park, we took a boat ride. One of the many interesting animals we saw was this tiny Malachite kingfisher (Alcedo cristata). We saw a few other kingfishers hunting, but this one was just sitting contentedly on the papyrus reeds dazzling us with his display of color.

These kingfishers are widely distributed in Africa south of the Sahara and are associated with bodies of water.

The bird has regular perches or stands from which it fishes. These are usually low over the water. It sits upright, its tail pointed downwards. It drops suddenly with a splash and usually returns at once with a struggling captive.

Large food items are beaten on a bough or rail; small fish and insects are promptly swallowed. A fish is usually lifted and carried by its middle, but its position is changed, sometimes by tossing it into the air, before it is swallowed head downwards. Fish, aquatic insects and crustaceans are eaten.

The nest is a tunnel in a sandy bank, usually over water. Both birds excavate. Most burrows incline upward before the nesting chamber is reached.

Size: 13 cm in length.

bonjour kyle
a part quelques inperfection sur le BG et le manque d'espace devant l'oiseau,ce cliché est fabuleux pour les couleurs et les details.

Hi Kyle,

amazing colors of a beautiful bird! Only the noise could be reduced a little bit (but this is just a detail!) and it's a pity that the sharpness of the head is not 100%.
Anyway, a picture to admire,

Wonderful close up image. I am amazed you got so close to a kingfisher. Lovely colours, great POV and sharp details

Hi Kyle,
Outstanding close up!
I would also be very motivated after see all this wonderful birds in the wilderness of Uganda.
You got this kingfisher with plenty of sharp and very clear details.
The tight composition works great with this colorful subject filling it.
My only nit would be about the excess of color saturation, reducing it in PP would like much more natural.
Congratulations, thanks for share and best regards,

Hi Kyle
