[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I love diverse patterns on butterflie's wings, but their different patterns often puzzle me a lot as to why their patterns are so? For instance, why is the pattern of this species like a map? To puzzle or bewilder its predators? Probably yes, because no predators like to read a map.
This butterfly is named "Cyrestis thyodamas". They are renowned for their attractive patterns of crossing fine lines on the wings which are like latitude and longitude lines of a map, and thatís why they are called "the Common MapĒ in English.
The Common Map is usually encountered singly at the open edges of forests or on gravel roads or along pebble-strewn river beaches, where they may bask in full sunlight or take in mineralised moisture. They are difficult to approach because they are usually flying in a erratic way, but once they start drinking liquid or sucking nectar from flowers, they tend to remain at the same spot for quite some time.
