I found this Indian Tortoiseshell butterfly at an altitude of 12000 ft during my trek to a high mountain pass in lesser Himalayas in the summer of 2014.

Aglais kaschmirensis, the Indian tortoiseshell, is a species of nymphalid butterfly found in the northern regions of the Indian subcontinent, primarily in the Himalayas.

Distribution

The Himalayas from Kashmir to Sikkim at elevations of 600 to 5,500 metres (2,000 to 18,000 ft) and as subspecies nixa (Grum-Grshimailo, 1890) Gissar Range- to Darvaz, Pamirs to Alay Mountains, Afghanistan, Pakistan, West China.

Hello Ram,
I love these colorful fast flying butterflies, trouble is I don't see many here in my area of Ohio. You have captured this particular specimen wonderfully in an attractive opened wing pose. Very sharp focus allowing us to view it in fine detail. Exposure is great especially considering the full sunlight you had to deal with. A real beauty!!
