Hello friends,
Lately I have been noticing a good number of “ First ones on TN”. So I was wondering whether I will be able to make a similar post too. Then I remembered this shot of mating squirrels which I think is the first one of its kind on TN.I had to dig up in my archives for this picture. It was taken in May 2007. I had forgotten all about it until now.

The place where we live is literally teemed with Jungle Palm Squirrels. It‘s always amusing to watch their antics. They scamper all over the place with their tiny feet- pitter patter, pitter patter…. This particular day I noticed them much more active than usual. They were chasing each other , running up and down the trees, , scattering all over the place as if they were in frenzy . I was wandering around with my camera looking for birds, but it looked like birds had abandoned me. I decided to take a break and sat for a while on the foot step of our cattle shed. Then I saw a squirrel coming towards my direction, obviously unaware of my presence. Suddenly it was taken by surprise by a male squirrel and they started mating. I was so thrilled. Here I was feeling despised and depressed because I didn’t get any thing to shoot and lo! I was witnessing a very rare scene. I clicked like I had gone mad. The squirrels did become aware of my presence, but they decided to ignore me. I got several good shots of them. This is one of them. Hope you will like it.

About Jungle palm Squirrel, it’s scientific name is Funambulus tristriatus

Certainly at least for me is the first time I see the usually cutie squirrels in this mating pose.
Is a very good picture, proper exposure and high quality of details.
Congratulations and thanks for share.

Smitha,

Great shot. I noticed quite a few of these squirrels at Kodanad. The picture is lovely. You seem to have gone flat on to the ground to take this picture. Great effort to bring this scene out so clearly.

Hello Smitha,
I think this fine action shot of a pair of mating Jungle Palm Squirrels is a first for the species on TN and if so, congratulations!
The shot itself shows the pair of well with good sharpness and colours taken from an excellent POV and set in a pleasing composition.
Thanks for sharing tis superb image,
Ivan

It is a prize shot, Smitha. We see these little cute creatures all over the place in many parts of India, but I have never seen them mating. In that respect, I'm sure it is the first-ever image on TN.
These denizens of the Western Ghats are different from the three-striped ones we see in North India. They are more colourful too.
The shot is technically superb.
Well done and TFS.

Hi Smitha,
This one is simply brilliant. How lucky you were that time. I can feel the excitement only seeing this in the photo. And I can feel how excited you were that time. Very well captured without shaky hands. Yes thats what happen to me when I get excited :). Excellent composition and details. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hi Smitha,
Great mating capture and POV of the action..I think they're smiling :)
Great details, color, and light also. And I like the diffuse colors of the BG that contrast so well. I've got 4 or 5 regulars here, have yet to catch em' the act though.
Howard

Hello Smitha,
I agree with you about witnessing a rare scene - the essence of nature's plan. Your capture is exceptionally good given the hasty circumstances. Very unique and natural image!
TFS Thomas

I used to see this variety often in my parental house in mlore during my childhood days. The duo would be seen chasing and running around jumping from one branch of a tree to another. The coconut trees would be their ideal point of love making. But you evoked those childhood memories..tfs..lovely pic.
