Hello Friends,
We have a Cycas revoluta (Sago palm) in our garden. Last December we were amazed to find a lot of Gram Blue butterflies on it. It seems Sago Palm is a host plant for these tiny blues. They rest on the plant with open wings to attract the opposite sex. We found many mating pairs on and around this plant. Some were even sitting on the ground. We had to be very cautious not to step on them.
With so many butterflies around I decided to make the best of my opportunity. I was finding it difficult to get the right depth of field, and then Anil told me to use the DOF preview button and lo! everything became alright.( I think I should listen to him more:) )

About Gram Blue: The Gram Blue (Euchrysops cnejus) is a small butterfly that belongs to the Lycaenids or Blues family. It is commonly found in dry places and cultivated lands. They are seen almost through out the year. The upper wings of the males are pale purplish suffused with a bluish shade. For female it is dark brown with bluish shade. Both have pale brown under wings. Under wings also have spots and lines. Both have small tails on the hind wings.
These butterflies are very much attracted to flowers.

The larvae are pale green with darker green or reddish dorsal and subdorsal lines. They are often seen surrounded by ants. The pupa is also green in colour.

Hello Smitha,
What an amazing photo. Excellent contrasting and clear colours. Very good sharpness. Great timing and a fantastic composition.

bonjour smitha
les sujets sont a mon gout un peu trop centrés mais la netteté est irreprochable.
le BG est egalement bien pour mettre les papillons e nvaleur.

Smitha, This seems to be the season for Gram Blues. We saw loads of them at Nandi Hills when we went with Gannu. However none did the show you have shot here. Very nice combination of colors in the foreground and background. Great compo.

Hi Smitha,

I can't imagine seeing so many butterflies at one time. And to have to be careful not to step on one amazes me. I have only seen a couple here this year and never see more than two or three in one day during the summer. Of course I have never seen a pair mating. You captured the moment beautifully. Nice details of the pretty markings and I love the soft colors.

Hi Smitha,
Outstanding shot of these mating beauties with lovely colours and crisp details. Great lighting and exposure and the precise DOF isolates the subjects so nicely from the BG. Very pleasing to the eyes. Excellent POV and composition. Kudos.

Hi Smitha,
A cute macro capture of this pair of The Gram Blue with excellent DOF, POV and framing. I think you and Sumon uploaded the same species in same day:). All are perfect my friend!

Dear Smitha,
You've saved up this beautiful capture for a long time! - It fits in very well with our blue butterflies that are just emerging here up the north!- This is a wonderful capture, very nicely composed and showing both butterflies sharply in focus. Excellent sharp details of their wing patterns and colours. A fine contrasting background too. Lovely!
Many thanks and best wishes, Ulla

Hello Smitha,
Excellent composition, colors, DOF, and a lovely BG that contrasts well.
Sharp & detailed, good use of flash to fill.
Very pleasing to the eye this one :)

Hello Smitha, I'm not sure if I've ever seen Gram Blues before and now between yourself and Sumon I've seen 3 in the same night. This is a good shot of the two of them, on this thin branch. Lighting and focus are both very good resulting in excellent detail on the two of them. They are a good looking butterfly.

Thanks, John

Hi Smitha

Your work just keeps on getting better and better.
Exellent composition of this lovely pair.
I really like this shot as you can clearly see the different patterns of male and female.
Excellent sharpness and exposure on a great OOF background.

Great work

And what is DOF button, Smitha?
I am unaware of its existence on the camera you and I use.
Thank Anil on my behalf; I'm gonna look for it first thing in the morning tomorrow (We stay the night at our son's place these days; he is down with severe chicken pox).
With Anil's guidance, the picture of these tiny mating butterflies has turned out into a terrific composition with superb focus, immaculate details and very pleasant and natural colours.
Well done and TFS.

I missed this wonderful macro of a pair of mating Gram Blues taking with technical perfection against a fine contrasting dark OOF natural BG. The composition on the sloping stem is excellent too.
