Dear Friends,
I dedicate this picture to all my friends in TN to say a warm "HELLO, I AM BACK.".:)
I have left my job(completed my term) and now I am going to be free to take pictures and spend time in TN. I have missed you all a lot. No wonder they say absence make your heart grow fonder. It's good to be back in TN , among my friends.
This picture of Spotted Munia, feeding her juveniles was taken last week in the paddy field near our home. There was a big flock of them gleaning the grass seeds and taking bath in the nearby , almost dried up stream. I guess I was lucky to get a few good shots of them.

Spotted Munia,Lonchura punctulata

It is smaller than sparrow in size. In breeding plumage the upper parts are chocolate brown in colour with lower parts white, speckled with black. In non-breeding and immature plumage, it is more or less plain brown. Both sexes are alike. It is found in flocks, about open cultivation. Its habits are typical of a Munia. It flocks sometimes up to 200 or more, hopping about gleaning grass seeds, etc. The birds also occasionally also devour winged termites emerging from the ground, and when disturbed fly up into trees and bushes, uttering feeble chirrups. Its nesting season is chiefly July to October. Its nest consists of a globular structure of grass blades like other munias', about 20 cm across, and with a lateral entrance hole near the top. Both sexes share domestic duties.

OTHER COMMON NAMES

English: Scaly-breasted munia/mannikin/finch, barred munia, spice finch/bird, ricebird, nutmeg mannikin/finch, spotted mannikin, common munia; French: Capucin damier; German: Muskatamadine; Spanish: Capuchino Nutmeg.

DISTRIBUTION

India, southern China, and Southeast Asia including parts of Malaysia and Indonesia. Populations introduced in Australia, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Japan, and the Seychelles.

Hi Smitha,

It's nice to have you back with us - been a long time. This picture of the mama Spotted Munia feeding her children is just priceless. Great timing to capture her in the midst of putting food into one little beak and all the others wide opened. Lovely colors, fine details, and a wonderful action shot.

Hello Smitha,

You have shown a very interesting scene in your photo. You ahev chsen very well the moment for taking it. Image has a very well chosen DOF so that the whole group of birds are sharply shown. Birds plumage makes a fine contrast with the plant they are sitting on as well as the background.

Thank you for sharing,

Hello Smitha,
What a wonderful scene you have captured.
Amazing that all 4 chicks are looking in the same direction... toward mama.
The clean BG and soft colors make this shot look like a Japanese painting.
A beautiful tableau indeed, sharp, well-lit, and well-composed.

Hi Smitha

Excellent scene and well spotted. Split-second timing ensured you captured this at just the right moment.

It is great to see you should now have sufficient time to spend on your favourite activities – photography and TrekNature. We missed you while you were gone and we're happy to note that you are back and that we will once again be privileged to see some of your outstanding material captured in Kerala.

This image of the Munias show great details as accomplished through the spot-on DOF. Superb exposure control ensured good lighting on the subjects. The colours are very natural and the BG is well OOF which compliments the birds and makes them stand out very nicely in the shot.

Great work MF and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Another golden moment that you share with us.
Great to see you back with a dear moment..
I like the title, and your selection of a family concept for this.

What more to say..?
Just superb.

Smitha, I'm delighted on two counts; first, your re-appearance on TN and second, this wonderful action picture of a mother feeding its little ones. It is a fantastic come-back image. Thank God, we have not lost you for ever for a demanding profession!
My, what a hungry congregation of little ones looking expectantly at their mother/father for their turn! The impatience is palpable on each eager face and each of them has a character of its own.
The image is technically very high quality.
Looking forward to your regular participation from now on.
Thanks and all the best.
