Amazingly the sun came out this morning but only for a short time to disappear again and leave us back in the grey gloom that we have had for virtually the past two months. So it was back to the archives.

This is a pair of Red-wattled Plovers (Vanellus indicus) photographed at a distance of 50 meters using my old Coolpix connected to my Zeiss birdwatching scope. The total magnification of the camera plus scope was 90x, which is equivalent to a focal length of over 3000 mm! This is known as digiscoping, a method that has its limits, but is useful for taking photographs of species that are shy.

Though this species is common and widespread in India, I found it difficult to photograph with my SLR and 420mm lens. To get a shot like this I would have to be at the most 15 meters away.
There are however those on TN who have succeeded in overcoming the shyness of this bird to take good images using SLR + long lens.

The Red-wattled Lapwing is often found on open ground near water. This pair are literally on the water, using the tight mat of floating vegetation to look for invertebrate food.

Little cropping was needed and after size reduction the image was selectively sharpened.

Press F11 to get the whole image

Hello Ivan,
What an incredible image with amazing depth of field and beautiful lighting. This makes for a razor sharp and nicely colored image, thanks Ivan.

Hello Ivan,
Very nice picture of this pair of plovers. Thanks a lot for sharing.
I still do not understand how the method of digiscoping could be easier than SLR + long-lens. But, the sharpness of the picture is amazing, which is not easy to get from a distance of 50m.

Hi Ivan,
Nice duo. Digiscoping definitely gives the reach.Though it needs the light to be good for getting pleasing results as you have achieved here.

ahhhh now theres the Ivan/man side of teh duo..using a technique of more than one in an image so well learned from previous along with a touch of Ulla terapy! Very nicely posed as they almost did it on command! A fine bird/s and great notations...

Hi Ivan,

A great capture with good quality considering you were 50 meters away,I have always wondered if it is possible to digiscope with a SLR,not that this is an intention of my as I am quite happy with my equipment, but maybe you have thought about it as you are in possesion of a scope, thanks

ps snow is almost gone again and temp is plus again, only I miss the sun

Hi Ivan,

It's a gloomy day here too - thick clouds and a forecast of snow in the mountains and rain in the valley. Not so bad because we know the sun will return tomorrow. A beautiful shot of this pair of Lapwings. I love the positions they are in. Striking colors, excellent details and a lovely setting.

Hi Ivan

Ah India, another destination I must get to some day.....
Digiscoping has its place and I think this is quite a good result, despite the small aberation under the chin of the rear bird. When you think about the combination of coolpix and scope, any reult is fantastic.
Well portrayed with a natural look, not one of alarm.

ps. hope your gloomy weather soon disappears, it's 25 deg C here at 11pm, bed time, good nite.

Hi Ivan, lovely couple with wonderful pose, great colors, splendid details and superb sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio

This is a great digiscoping photo. You have managed verey well with the sharpness, the biggest problem for me when I am digiscoping. I would like to see more of your photos from India, I guess I have to dig a bit in you archive... ;o)

Hello Ivan
Nice presentation.Beautiful composition.Good POV and sharp image.Even your second subject have a good focus.Light and colors are very nice.I also like that catch light in there eyes.

It always amazes me how God designed nature to complement itself. Unless photographers all over the world just get lucky that often, these birds have feathers that are almost the exact color as the the ground they are standing on, and I know it's normal, but it will always make me stop and take a deep breath every time I see it. That's just the kind of sappy gal that I am. I am impressed with how you created this shot. It's just lovely. TFS.

Hello Ivan, very nice birds ! The composition is very original, the details are perfectly sharp and the exposure is fine. Well done my friend, very very good !

I saw quite a few of these birds on the banks of Yamuna river today morning, Ivan. They take flight at the slightest movement you make towards them. Taking a shot from a distance of more than 50 meters with my 70-300mm would have been useless.
You have used your scope in combination with your Coolpix with deadly accuracy. The magnified image is flawless. The colours too are sharp and rich.
TFS and regards.

nice pair of birds, the rounded leaved plant on the water is a fern called Salvinia. best regards, Ori
