[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Friends, in September 2008, I was in Ajmer, Rajasthan, and staying on the campus of my old residential school called Mayo College. As I have written many times earlier, that 400 acre campus is a wild life sanctuary in itself.

It was about 8 in the morning that I set out to take some pictures. I began with the immediate surroundings of the guest house I was staying in, and I was thrilled at all sorts of butterflies and other insects milling around. There was such a variety of them I just kept shooting like crazy. Since I was having a great go at the butterflies, I only occasionally clicked other insects when they came within the range and frame. This dragonfly I am posting today was one of them. It was a single shot and it was lost even to me with so many butterflies filling up my memory card. It was only out of curiosity that I picked this picture the other day to find out what I had shot in that frame. And lo and behold, this was a Yellow-tailed Ashy Skimmer -- my first and only one till date.

My research shows it is not a very common dragonfly and there is practically very little information available on it. As such, I have been able to gather only its common and genus name -- Potamarcha congener. It is a good looking dragonfly with two-coloured eyes, an ashy blue thorax and a four segmented black and yellow abdomen or tail.
Hope you like it.
Thanks for looking and all the best.

Dear Ram!

Many thanks for presenting us this apparently rare dragonfly. The simple composition well serves the aim of the picture and the viewer gets a good overall impression of this beautiful insect. I also find the lighting- and colour management very good and the nicely blurred background highlights the shapes of the dragonfly at best. Moreover, your picture is well accompanied by your notes that are a subtle and pleasant mix of narration and information.

Kind regards

Markus

Hello Ram

A beautiful capture of this rare dragonfly. I remember Ajmer very well - an an amazing place - but then so many places in India are.

Your account reminds me of an evening in Nagur - two boys started talking to us whilst we were eating and insisted that we came back to meet their parents who were teachers - we spent a lovely evening in the teachers' compound.

Best wishes

James

I really LOVE the color of this Dragonfly, I think I had nevr seen this species before. And you have made such a great capture. I like the very typical pose of the insect, the vivid colors, the blurred BG, and the composition, with lots of space around the Dragon. Very well done !

Hi Ram!

It does look really special - the 'usual' tones of blue but with those special yellow spots. Dragonflies and damselflies are like Lego for me - there's many variations you'll find been put together of some known 'ingredients' or parts :) I'm not at all a specialist but like to watch them very much.
Very well taken especially for a singe frame..

Congratulations and TFS!

Best regards,
Andor

Hi Ram.
This species is uncommon in our region. It is really beautiful. Composition of the shot and POV are the best for this subject I think. All features of the dragonfly if shown perfectly against the fine smooth BG. Excellent close-up. My best wishes and TFS.
Alexei.
