The Common Banded Peacock (Papilio crino) is a species of swallowtail (Papilionidae) butterfly found in parts of South Asia including India and Sri Lanka.

The butterfly is solitary and a fast flyer. It flies high above and forages on the trees (e.g., Creeper blooms on Bamboo). However, occasionally it is attracted to bright flowers of plants on the ground as well (e.g., dwarf red Ixora). It flutters in a hurry while sipping nectar.

It is distinguished due to its colour which is shiny fluorescent blue or green depending on the angle of observation. The magnificent colours are due to scales in interior of its wings. Also there are spots in the bottom of its hind wings similar to eye spots. The exterior of wings is brownish-black with patterns similar to eye-spots. Perhaps the only protection for this species is self-mimicry through the eye-spots as regards to its morphology, considering its bright peacock colours. Hence, it is a fast flyer.

Its expanse is 100-116 mm. It is distributed in Lower Bengal; Forested parts of Central and Southern India (including Kerala); Sri Lanka. The female lays eggs on leaves of the Satinwood tree Chloroxylon swietenia.

Scientific classification -
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Lepidoptera
Family: Papilionidae
Genus: Papilio
Species: P. crino

Hello Sumon,
What a fantastic colours and sharpness in this photo. Great composition and POV.
TFS,
Peter

Again using a new technique of the subject covering another. How new! An exciting way to take a shot. Perhaps when I am feeling like getting closer to the ground I shall try this.

In your particular case, color and perfect focus still make for a surreal picture!

Hello Sumon,
Great close up with vivid colors and POV well composed TFS best regards/LAwhill

What an unusual color and pattern. You have a way of capturing the slightest variation of colors. If I had attempted green on green, it would have looked like...well, a big green lump. ha ha
Beautiful wing-spread, great pov, and good contrast and color

Hi Sumon,

How do you manage to present a beauty on a daily basis? This one jumps off the screen. The greens are marvelous, the wing pattern with all its details is excellent. Fantastic pose with the lovely green leaves. A beautiful composition.

Jane

Something went wrong with my net connection and I was off TN for four days, Sumon. Obviously, I missed a great deal during this forced absence.
At the moment, I am strongly attracted by your new picture and going to it first.
This specimen of a Banded Peacock looks so resplendent and rich in its predominently green colours and extremely attractive patterns on the wings. You are in the middle of a rich natural environment in Bhubaneswar.
The picture is perfect both technically and aesthetically.
Thanks for sharing this gem of a picture.

Hello Sumon,
Excellent capture of a Banded Peacock Swallotail. Superb sharpness and lighting. The freshness of this specimen and the pose and POV is almost as if you shot this at a butterfly farm, but I assume this was taken in the wild.
Nice shot!
TFS and best wishes, Ivan
