Whenever I think of lizards, geckos or chameleons I will always remember my friend for 3 days - the Indian Chameleon. Needless to say I had a wonderful time with it and my excitement knew no bounds. Hence, while I do this mini series on lizards I cannot resist posting another shot of this charming one. Hope everyone like it.

I dedicate this photo to our much learned friend Bayram Gocmen for this rich contribution to TN.

----------------------------
The Indian Chameleon, Chamaeleo zeylanicus is a species of chameleon found in Sri Lanka, India and other parts of South Asia. Like other chameleons, this species has a long tongue, feet that are shaped into bifid claspers, a prehensile tail, independent eye movement and the ability to change skin colour. They move slowly with a bobbing or swaying movement and are usually arboreal. Strangely, they do not choose the background colour and may not even be able to perceive colour differences. They are usually in shades of green or brown or with bands. They can change colour rapidly and the primary purpose of colour change is for communication with other chameleons and for controlling body temperature by changing to dark colours to absorb heat.

More then 160 species of Chameleons are known, arranged in nine genera. About half the species occur in Madagascar and neighbouring islands, the other half chiefly in Africa.

The head has a bony casque, ornamented with crests or tubercles. A separation between the eyes, the interorbital septum is present. Pre-maxillary extremely small, edentulous; orbit bony all round, the pre- and post-frontals often joining to form a supraorbital roof; a pair of supra-nasal fontanelles, bordered by the nasals, the prefrontals, and the frontal; the latter bone single; parietal single, often much narrowed and compressed, forming a crest, and meeting posteriorly the extremities of the squamosals. Dentition acrodont; teeth compressed, triangular, more or less distinctly tricuspid. Palate toothless. Eye large, covered by a thick granular lid pierced with a small central opening for the pupil. No tympanum or external ear. Body compressed; neck very short. Vertebrae procoelian. Abdominal ribs present. Limbs long, raising the body. Digits arranged in bundles of 2 and 3; in the hand, the inner bundle is formed of three, the outer of two digits; it is the reverse in the foot. Tail prehensile. Head and body covered with granules or tubercles.

Casque much elevated posteriorly, with strong curved parietal crest; the distance between the commissure of the mouth and the extremity of the casque equals or nearly equals the distance between the end of the snout and the hinder extremity of the mandible; no rostral appendages; a strong lateral crest, not reaching the end of the parietal crest; an indication of a dermal occipital lobe on each side, not reaching the parietal crest. No enlarged tubercles on the body; a feebly serrated dorsal crest; a series of conical tubercles form a very distinct crest along the throat and belly. Male with a tarsal process or spur, Tail longer than head and body. Gular-ventral crest white; commissure of the mouth white.

From snout to vent 7 inches long with a prehensile tail of 8 inches.

Hello Sumonda,
We were neighbors and this is superb. I always remember Paul (who always post on Chameleon). I am more tempted to visit you/Hara and pankajda on a photo trip. This shot is just superb. Ganesh

A superb macro-capture of a beautiful chameleon specimen from a favourable lateral POV Sumon, its characteristic, rich colouration and typical stance are finely reproduced in this vertical frame, thanks for sharing this gift of nature with us, my friend.
Mehmet

Wowwwwwww….. wowwwww and once more wooowww …. Sumon

Splendid capture of this beautiful chameleon with fine technical qualities and an excellent pose on a dried branch.
Your exposure was good enough to provide us with great detail of the chameleon's pattern and coloration.
Also you showed us an interesting species. I do not remember it from earlier posts on TN.
I have to admit that I have never seen of this species before, so thanks for sharing this and widening my knowledge on Chameleons :-)
Somebody who has not got any experience with chameleons can think that this guy has got some problem with his camouflage mechanism.
In this way, I can say easily that interestingly and almost all chameleon species exhibit green colouration when they settled black or blackish BG as seen in your capture. The reason and mechanism of this event is still under discussion.
In Cyprus, when we encountered with them on the roads they also shows green colouration. Anyway:-), thanks for your kind dedication to me and of course, I'm taking this in to my favorites:)!
TFS my friend.
My best regards

Bayram

Hello Sumon,
Chamaeleons are fascinating and to capture one in a fine sharp shot like this that shows the whole animal from a great POV must be as much of a delight as for us to see the photo.
A great tribute to our TN professor, Bayram and thanks for sharing this beauty,

Hallo Sumon
Time is rather limited at the moment, but I could not pass without leaving a few words of appreciation for your posting. Just the other day Loot said he cannot remember when last he saw a chameleon. This "Indian Chameleon" markings and patterns are very prominent and well seen. The texture, and scales are also clearly visible and the bright green colour is very attractive. You have captured it in a lovely close up pose and details like the eye-lid, toe nails and not forgetting to mention the curled up tail are well displayed. Lovely presentation.
Kind regards.
