The Common Crow or Oleander Butterfly has a distinctive silvery pupa (chrysalis) that can often be found on oleander bushes in parks and gardens during winter and throughout all seasons .The adult butterfly is easily recognised by its dark brown wings that are spotted white.


Identification
The adult butterflies have dark brown to black wings with white spots along the margins. The wingspan is about 7 cm across. The male's forewing has a bow-shaped hind margin, while the female's is straight.

The adult butterflies only have four normal legs, as the first pair of legs is not fully developed (a common feature of the Family Nymphalidae).

The larvae (caterpillars) are orange-brown with a dark underside, with each segment striped black and white across the top. The sides of the caterpillar have a white band or series of white spots. Eight paired fleshy appendages ('tentacles') are found on the upper side of the second, third, fifth and eighth segments. The caterpillars grow to 5.7 cm long.

The pupa (chrysalis) is stout (about 1.8 cm long) and shiny, reflecting silver to gold.

A sterling shot of this beautiful brown butterfly endemic to our country, Satya.
Perfect exposure, composition and colours. The OOF BG is very suitable for the subject.
I see one flying around in my school, but it never settles down. I have shot it only once in Mumbai.

Great shot of this very very common butterfly but getting a perfect image of the black wings is always a challenge. You have done it so well here. Nice pose captured against the greenish BG. You could have composed it better - too centralized. Anyway a superb capture. Thanks for sharing.

Very beautiful butterfly and a picture with great colour-combination. May be to decentrate a little bit the Common Crow and cut a little on one side would make the picture more balanced.
