Mylabris sp.
Common names: Blister Beetle, Beetle Ladybird.
Abundant in China and India. These beetles are about 25mm long and 9mm broad; wing-cases black, with three broad, wavy, orange-yellow bands, which, when examined under a lens, are seen to bear black bristly hairs.
A potent and highly irritant vesicant contained in the body fluids of these beetles, which is released if the beetle is brushed, pressed, or crushed against the skin, causes blistering eruptions; a condition known as Blister Beetle Dermatitis. Usually the beetles do not have a bite or sting venomous to humans.
The chief constituent of mylabris is from 1-1.2% of cantharidin. The beetles also contain fat and an odorous principle.
Medicinal preparations from Mylabris (Henriette's Herbal Homepage - http://www.henriettesherbal.com)
Vinegar of Mylabris (Acetum Mylabridis).
Warming Plaster of Mylabris (Emplastrum Calefaciens Mylabridis).
Mylabris Plaster (Emplastrum Mylabridis).
Blistering Liquid of Mylabris (Liquor Epispasticus Mylabridis).
Mylabris Ointment (Unguentum Mylabridis).
