Hello Friends,
Last week we took a one day trip to Munnar. Took a short walk in the hills (3hrs)with the kids sighted many birds, photgraphed a few more over it was fun. In the afternoon we went to the lake and this one is from there. Shooting from a small boat is fun the fast AFS300f2.8VR lens did help me a lot in getting these birds in focus.

The Little Grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis, formerly known as Dabchick) is 23 to 29 cm in length. It is the smallest European member of the grebe family of water birds and is commonly found in open bodies of water across most of its range. T. r. capensis in the species found here in India. The adult is unmistakable in summer, predominantly dark above with its rich, rufous colour neck, cheeks and flanks, and bright yellow gape. The rufous is replaced by a dirty brownish grey in non-breeding and juvenile birds.

Juvenile birds have a yellow bill with a small black tip, and black and white streaks on the cheeks and sides of the neck as seen below. This yellow bill darkens as the juveniles age, eventually turning black once in adulthood

In winter, its size, buff plumage, with a darker back and cap, and “powder puff” rear end enable easy identification of this species. The Little Grebe's breeding call, given singly or in duet, is a trilled repeated weet-weet-weet or wee-wee-wee which sounds like a horse whinnying.

Thanking you

Hi Anil,
Very good capture of this Little Grebe taking off. You could not prepare for this as they usually just dive. Great POV and composition, sharp details and warm natural colours.

Hi Anil,
Wonderful timing, good use of shutter speed here. You got everything perfect here. Usually one would like to see more space in front of the bird in a situation like this but this is beautiful exception because of the splash the grebe left behind which with the help of green shade water looks prominent. lovely image. tfs.

Hello Anil,
An excellent action shot of a Little Grebe taking off from the water, the frozen action at a fine wing position and the droplets of water a nice extra. Excellent lighting, sharpness and contrast with the dark green reflections on the water.
Thanks for sharing this delight,
Kind regards to you and your family,

Anil, What a beauty. Love the water running. Well saturated colors. Wish you had included more of the reflection and more water steps.

Very beautiful photo in well saturated contrasting colours. Excellent sharp details, POV and composition.

Superb action shot, Anil.
at 1/2000, even the small bits of spray have been captured extremely well. The action is fluid and and beautiful.
I have a strong desire to visit Munnar some day.
Thanks and regards,

Hello Anil,

This is shutter release bang on!! alas only if you could little more space in the front to complete the perfect picture...there would have been movement...never the less its indeed a very good image.TFS.
