Dear friends, I am back after a long time. A bit of year ending work pressure and a bit of winter travelling (photographing ventures) put me off TN but I missed you all. Also I was fortunate to have participated in the Tiger Census Programme conducted by the Simlipal Tiger Reserve recently and it indeed was a lifetime experience. Anyway.....hope to be around now and keep uploading.

Today I present this beautiful butterfly - the Peacock Pansy. But this is an old photo from my archives. Shot taken hand held in morning light. Hope everyone like it.

------------------------------------
The Peacock Pansy, Junonia almana, is a species of nymphalid butterfly found in South Asia.

A small to medium sized orange butterfly with large eyespots on the upper side of hind wings, and smaller ones on the forewing. The sexes are similar in colour and pattern. The females is usually larger. The short wavy black bands that emanate from the costal margins are distinctive. The under side is variable. Some specimens have very small markings against a light ground colour, while others have more prominent eyes and richer colors.

A widely distributed species but is scarce at elevations above 3000 feet. This is an edge species and can be seen around rice fields more frequently than at any other location. It may be seen almost year round though its numbers peak only during the monsoons.

Its habits are very similar to the Chocolate Soldier or Lemon Pansy and it joins migratory flights. The large eyes are displayed suddenly when the butterfly opens its wings - this unexpected visual signal presumably confuses the predator and takes it by surprise. The larvae feed on plants of the Acanthaceae.

Scientific classification -
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Lepidoptera
Family: Nymphalidae
Subfamily: Nymphalinae
Genus: Junonia
Species: J. almana

Hello Sumon,
A very fine closed-wing, almost frame-filling capture of a Peacock Pansy taken from a perfect POV. The sharpness details are exquisite and the lighting just right to show this up so well against the OOF natural BG.
Delightful Sumon and thanks for sharing it!

Hi Sumon,

It's been a while since we've seen one of your beautiful butterflies. This is exquisite. You captured the Peacock Pansy in a wonderful pose on the interesting flower. Colors, textures and details are magnificent. This macro shows off the shape, the shadings and the beautiful markings perfectly. Another superb composition. I'm so glad you are back with us.

Hi Sumon,
that's fantastic - so sharp, so pretty light and colours. It's amazing to see such a beauty in free nature - not in a butterfly house.
Beautiful, thanks

Hi Sumon Da,
Welcome back after the Tiger Census trip to Simlipal. Hope you and Satya babu enjoyed a lot. A nice capture from your archives. Superb sharp details and a lovely composition. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Another worthy butterfly presentation from your extensive collection. Very, very well done.

In butterfly photography two underrepresented areas are profiles and shots from the underside of a perched butterfly. This is an very fine profile taken from a low perspective.

As always you have impeccable DOF and the sharpness and the overall technical quality of this image is exceptional.

Hi Sumon
Lovely composition with fine intricate detail and very nice color, texture in the butterfly wings.

hello sumon,
welcome back, seems like both of us wer not here for quite sometime, i have posated only 3 shots in a month, i am happy to see you back and your butterflies, i liked the lower pov and the details captured, the butterfly looks lovely from this perspective,
well done,
tfs & regards
pankaj

I appreciate your choice of a different point of view since most of us are enamoured by the flashy yellow of this butterfly's upper wings with those eye-spots on them, Sumon.
This side of the wings has its own kind of beauty which you have captured very well in this sharp picture.
It must be a great experience to be involved in the Tiger Census Programme.
So welcome back and hope to see you on regular basis.
Regards,
Ram

Hi Sumon!

I'm glad you are back and especially glad that you survived your tiger experience... I also would like to take the opportunity to wish you all the best for the new year. A bit late, but straight from my heart.

You are right, this butterfly is a beauty. You have put it so well on stage. The great sharpness added to a fine depth of view create a magnificent impact. The perspective obtained by the subtle diagonal composition is superb.

Kind regards

Markus
