The Little Green Bee-eater, Merops orientalis, is a near passerine bird in the bee-eater family. It is resident in a belt across sub-Saharan Africa from Senegal and the Gambia to Ethiopia, the Nile valley, western Arabia and Asia through India to Vietnam.

This species should not be confused with the Little Bee-eater, Merops pusillus.

Description

Like other bee-eaters, this species is a richly coloured, slender bird. It is about 9 inches (16-18 cm) long with about 2 inches made up by the elongated central tail-feathers. The sexes are not visually distinguishable. The entire plumage is bright green and tinged with blue especially on the chin and throat. The crown and upper back are tinged with golden rufous. The flight feathers are rufous washed with green and tipped with blackish. A fine black line runs in front of and behind the eye. The iris is crimson and the bill is black while the legs are dark grey. The feet are weak with the three toes joined at the base. Southeast Asian birds have rufous crown and face, and green underparts, whereas Arabian beludschicus has a green crown, blue face and bluish underparts. The wings are green and the beak is black. The elongated tail feathers are absent in juveniles. Sexes are alike.

The calls is a nasal trill 'tree-tree-tree-tree, usually given in flight.

Thanks for sharing

Wonderful clarity. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks,

Hi Ram,
This is one of your best photographs (my view) The high key almost white BG along with lowkey contrasty subject is what makes this picture standout. It so well composed that each and every object has a part to play, the twig gives the required depth of field to the pic and the green OOF area at the bottom anchors the main subject and makes this a natural looking shot.

Thank you for sharing this beauty with us.

Hello Ram!

Fantastic bird today! I love its pose with stretched out long tail. Good colours and very clean composition with single twig. Pity that BG is almost white, but overall it's excellent picture my friend!

Hello Ram !
Wow, I love this picture ! The pose of the bird is wonderful, looking into the far away horizon (or sky, or whatever...) It's nice also to see him sitting on such a dangerous-looking thorny twig, it's a nice contrast with the beauty of the bird. Nice details, too, and the white sky makes the bird stand out really nicely. Very well done !
Valerie.

hello Ram
great picture of this bee-eater sitting on this thorny branch
He stand out very nicely from the white BG
I like the composition very much
Jacqueline

Hello Ram,
You mentioned that these are found through Africa and Asia, but I have seen very similar birds from South and Central America too.
They are probably different species, but similar nonetheless.
A very nice capture.
TFS this exotic species.
Cheers
Steve

Hello Ram,
I loved your composition of the bird perched on a thorny branch. The sharpness and the vivid details of the bird combined with its posture and the contrast provided by the thorny branch on the plain white-lit background provides some action to the shot. Moreover, the focus on the eye is exceptional. Thanks for sharing.
Regards,
Ravish.

Hello Ram,
This is a very fine shot of the beautiful Green Bee-eater, showed in a perfect pose on a quite thorny branch. I suppose that there was some fog to have this special white background, which underlines the fine shape of the bird. It seems to me that this bird is living everywhere, except Switzerland. Thanks also so much to have made me enter in your favourite-list, I feel so happy.
Best regards
Anne

Hello Ram,

You have made a good photo with this nice bird. Despite your rear POV you have had a fine eye contact. The bird is sharply seen so good details of the plumage can be observed. The photo has a fine composition and the diagonaly placed perch looks fine.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian
