The last of the critters this year. Found it on wild flowers on my school campus a few days ago.
The bluebottle flyed as fishing bait, is called a maggot, while its pupa, also widely used for bait, is called a caster. Similar species include the green bottle fly, a close relative that can be distinguished by its bright green metallic colouring. Bluebottle fly adults feed on nectar, while the larvae feed on carcasses of dead animals. Adults are also pollinators to some flowers with strong odor.

Hello Ram,
A great shot of this colorful Bluebottle Fly. Nicely focused and displaying very good detail of both fly and flower. I like the way you composed the image, keeping it slightly off center. The colors are well saturated and the exposure is right on the money.
I have known this fly since a young boy, I always thought they were so beautiful. We called them blow flies because of the bloated condition of the animal bodies which their maggots lived off of. I did not know that the adults fed on nectar.....proves you are never to old to learn:) Thanks!!

Hi Ram
Thanks a lot for posting this interesting fly. The color is good. This fly is a bundle of contradictions from human point of view. As a pollinator it has an important ecological function (They often pollinate flowers with strong odors). But it is also considered as pest and carrier of disease. Looking forward to a frontal image of this fly.
