Asian Koel Bird Male
 |
|
[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
In April, the male of the Asian Koel Bird species becomes vocally active, giving doleful calls to the female -- 'Ku-hoo, ku-hoo' from tree tops and mostly concealed in foliage. It's basically a shy bird. Whenever I hear it calling from trees around my house, I desperately try to locate it, but mostly in vain.
Today morning, my frustration was considerably assuaged when it started calling from the acacia tree nearest to my house and fully in view! I was thrilled and made a dash for my camera. Unfortunately, it was the shady side of the tree facing me, so I had to choose camera settings with caution. I wasn't very successful since with aperture value of 6.3 and shutter speed of 400 and ISO hiked to 160, I got grainy and noisy images only. So here is a picture of this bird -- passable but not the best.
The Asian koel (Eudynamys scolopaceus)is a member of the cuckoo order of birds, the Cuculiformes. It is found in the Indian Subcontinent, China, and Southeast Asia. It forms a super-species with the closely related black-billed and Pacific koels which are sometimes treated as subspecies. The Asian koel is a brood parasite that lays its eggs in the nests of crows and other hosts, who raise its young. They are unusual among the cuckoos in being largely frugivorous as adults. The name koel is echoic in origin with several language variants. The bird is a widely used symbol in Indian poetry.

Hello Sir,
You have been fortunate enough to at least capture the Asian Koel. I have been hearing its "Kuhoo - Kuhoo" song almost entire spring but have not been able to even get a glimpse of the Koel.
Thanks for sharing the pic.
Regards,
Satirtha

Hello Ram,
As you already stated a bit grainy, but under the adverse circumstance you described not bad at all. We can clearly see its unique body features and rich black plumage. The bright red eye immediately captures your attention. After reading your notes I just had to look this bird up on youtube to hear its call...beautiful!!
