Pareronia valeria.
The Wanderer.

Pareronia valeria (Cramer, 1776)

Order: Lepidoptera
Family: Pieridae
Subfamily: Pierinae
Tribe: Colotini
Genus: Pareronia

Wingspan approximately 80mm.

It was on an early morning walk through downtown Mumbai that I came to see this exquisitely coloured elegant flier for the first time. I was out to see some green before starting a busy day, and I knew there was a little garden with a few giant palm trees and a number of tropical plants in full blossom in front of Mumbai Central railway station. Entering that tiny oasis in the city centre of a buzzing megalopolis of around 20 million people I was standing alone in some colourful tropical fairyland that was visited by a surprising number of butterflies busily flying from blossom to blossom in the bright morning sun.

An elegant blue glider was effortlessly sailing from one flower to the next one - but never stopped for a rest or a drink.

The same day at noon there was a lucky second chance to get a picture of that beauty. Visiting “Bollywood”, the Film City in Goregaon, I was surprised to get into a beautiful unspoiled landscape of green hills covered with dense forest just a few miles north of Mumbai. So instead of sitting down for lunch I decided to stay outside in the green between the studios to have a look into nature. Right there at some tree with red blossoms and a hedge of Lantana a few blue gliders arrived for a drink of nectar.

The species:

Pareronia valeria (Cramer 1776), the Common Wanderer, shows a conspicuously bright blue tint in the white coloration of upper wings in the male sex. It prefers open tropical forests with moderate rainfall at low elevations. Quite common in the jungles of India’s Western Ghats. A quick and determined flyer with elegant gliding motions of wings, the butterfly is fond of visiting brightly coloured flowers.

The caterpillars feed on Capparis ssp.

Area of distribution: Southern India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, Borneo, Philippines.

Hello Peter

This is indeed a splendor!
What a fantastic butterfly in a great composition!
The POV here is excellent - capturing it so that we all could see all the lovely colors and patterns from its wings - the DOF is impecable, creating a distinc barrier between it and the nicely blurred BG and the contrast bweteen the black&white colors of the butterfly and the wonderfull tones of its surroundings is charming.
A GREAT post, my friend!

Bravo and TFS

Hallo Peter,
Sabine - wishnugaruda

Excellent shot of this colourful specimen, Peter. Great POV, composition and colours.
Mumbai seems to be a good place for chasing butterflies ;-)! I too chased some when I was there this September. The custodians of certain parks in Powai area were a bit rude to me, though. You see, everything looks commercial to the people of Mumbai and they do not permit even still photography without a permit!
My conviction that you had a good time in India is further strengthened after looking at this lovely picture.
Regards,
Ram

Hallo Peter,

Bravo!!!.
RAP ;~)

Here arrived the faultfinder of the neighborhood, although I should say that I don't have a lot to criticize in this beautiful presentation my friend.
I love them... the point of view and the framing that you chose, the saturated but not distorted colors, the correct control of the intense light (even on the lantanas) and the great sharpness and definition captured.
The bottom appears correctly diffuse also.
As in previous presentations, your accurate secondary presentations with images on the place and the inhabitants of the region where they were depicted.
Bravo!!!.
RAP ;~)

Superb image of this beautiful butterfly.
Sorry no time for critique.
Well done.

I appreciate your Honest critique. Now about your picture which you had captured in Mumbai. Wanderer is a common species even in our area(kolkata), but always nice to see due to its attractive color. Well presented with nice light. Thanks for sharing. Regards - Srikumar
