Another shot of my favourite plain tiger butterfly. I have so many shots of this beautiful butterfly in my archive. This species is the most common one in India & hence is photographed commonly.

I feel like celebrating plain tiger week & posting different shots of plain tiger butterfly for entire week.

The Plain Tiger (Danaus chrysippus) or - outside Asia - African Monarch is a common butterfly which is widespread in Asia and Africa. It belongs to the danaine ("Crows and Tigers") subfamily of the brushfooted butterfly family Nymphalidae.

It is believed to be one of the first butterflies to be used in art. A 3500 year old Egyptian fresco in Luxor features the oldest illustration of this species (Larsen 1994).

The Plain Tiger can be considered the archetypical danaine of India. Accordingly, this species has been studied with in greater detail than other members of its subfamily occuring in India.

The Plain Tiger is a medium sized butterfly with a wingspan of about 7–8 cm. The body is black with many white spots. The wings are tawny the upper side being brighter and richer than the underside. The apical half of the fore wing is black with a white band. The hind wing has 3 black spots around the center. The hind wing has a thin border of black enclosing a series of semicircular white spots.

Another great shot Pankaj the details look good and colours are amazing nice work tfs rgds Necip.

This butterfly is my favourite too, Pankaj.
It looks so elegant on those yellow marigolds.
This is a good capture of the profile view. The focus is sharp and the colours deliciously rich.
Looking forward to rest of the postings of your Plain Tiger Week :-).

Hello Pankaj,
IF this were your first Plain Tiger shot that I saw on TN, I would have said 'WOW!'
But though this is a good one I prefer some of the others that you have posted of this species. The best thing about this shot is the sharpness andetailed colouring of the wings.
TFS and best wishes, Ivan
