[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note

I am posting the last of the three pictures I had of this Red Munia. All the pictures were of the same bird shot in the last one month at Omkar Hills near Bangalore. This picture was taken when the Red Munia was still furnishing the nest with soft feathers for its tiny chicks coming out of the egg.

I also wanted to post along with this picture immense amount of information I gathered from Goutham and Satish.

Red Munia is a sparrow sized small bird. The picture you see is that of a male. The female looks similar except that the red plumage around the head is replaced by brown plumage. They lay eggs in specially constructed nest. The nest is generally constructed close to the ground in thick bushes. It takes 3 to 4 weeks for the egg to hatch and may be another 3 to 4 weeks before the chicks can start flying. This is the best time to take pictures of this bird. Because of their small size, one needs to get close to the nest to get pictures of the bird. Typically a hide is required to take pictures without disturbing the bird. The photographers have a moral responsibility to be as unobtrusive as possible because if the bird becomes too suspicious, it will abandon the eggs/chicks.

The Red Munias always approach the nest from the same direction. Like most birds, they approach the nest cautiously. They typically hop from one tree to another and then take a perch on any twig closest to the nest before entering the nest. This makes it easy to track the bird and gives ample time for the photographer to prepare oneself for taking pictures. However since the bird is quite quick, and since the bird can choose any twig close to the nest, it is still left to your luck to get a good picture. Between each return to the nest, the bird spends 15 minutes to 2 hours fetching feed or nest material. One has to wait patiently for the bird to return. Flash can be very helpful to get a good fill especially in the afternoon.
