Hi Ben,

It's not often one sees tropical orchids in the wild, not even shots of them.
This shot is sharp with fine colouring and light and you present it very well.

I prefer orchids in their wild state, Benyamin. And I have been given to understand that your country has perhaps the largest and the finest varieties of orchids.
This is a fine cmposition featuring a branch with three flowers on it. The colours and shapes are quite attractive.

Hi Ben

Your part of the world are blessed with so many orchid species, some not even discovered or described yet. During the last decade or so there were quite a number of new discoveries and I think this specimen you posted is actually one of them. I managed to find the ID for this flower after 4 hours of interesting research (in books, orchid magazines, and on the internet) and I am happy to say your species is a Large-leafed Dendrobium or also known as The Pastor's Orchid - Dendrobium macrophyllum. Distribution: Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Malaysia and Java. You can compare and read more about it at these sites: here, here, here, or here. You may note that this species is still under further taxonomic investigation due to the many colour variations found within the species.

What made the research quite difficult was the fact that I did not know where to start. I had no idea of the genus since these flowers don't look like one of your average Dendrobium species. If one knows the genus then it is obviously not too difficult to find the species, but if you don't know the genus the field becomes so big. There are ±35,000 natural species and approximately 60,000 registered hybrids that are formed from ±1,000 natural genera and about 550 manmade intergeneric ones.

Anyway, you’ve captured it in a fine composition, the colours are very rich and well saturated, and you made good use of the available natural light the bring out the textures and to accentuate those fine bristles on the stems.

Quite an amazing flower with its alien shape and hairy stalk.Lovely detail and nicely composed with the three flowers.The DOF has made it stand out well despite the same coloured background.Must be a great experience to explore such a rainforest.TFS and have a good week.
