INSECTS OF SULAWESI
This series of postings is intended to increase the knowledge on insects of Sulawesi. Except for butterflies, little is known on most other insect groups of this huge island.
Large parts are only poorly explored also with respect to butterflies, such as the south-eastern Peninsula, Sulawesi-Tenggara.

The picture shows two different species which are relatives of the well-known Monarch Butterfly, Danaus plexippus, and of the Plain Tiger, Danaus chrysippus. They belong to the genus Euploea which comprises altogether 14 species in Sulawesi.

Left: - Euploea hewitsonii (= hyacinthus),
Right: - Euploea algea
- family: Nymphalidae
- subfamily: Danainae.

Unfortunately, you cannot enjoy the impressive blue iridescence of the upperside wing pattern of hewitsonii.

The plant which has attracted both species is a
- Heliotropium species
- family: Boraginaceae

which contains pyrrolizidine-alkaloids.

Besides the two species shown on the picture, some further Danainae species were present on the same kind of plant nearby:
Danaus genutia, Euploea westwoodi, Parantica cleona und Ideopsis juventa.

Location
Porabua - a small village in the vast mountaineous and rain forest covered region north of the line Kolaka - Kendari (Indonesia, Southeast-Sulawesi).

Conditions
- natural late afternoon light
- no wind
- handheld

Hi Peter
I like the note and I like the photo. Great sharp image. Beautiful butterflies, nice blured background but with little noise in the dark green parts.

Lieber Peter,
Bravo!
Einen schönen Abend und herzliche Grüsse
Anne
