[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Gunung Bromo (Mount Bromo) is a small but active volcanic cinder cone on the Indonesian island of Java. Bromo is located in the centre of the Sand sea Caldera, itself only a portion of the larger Tengger Caldera (a caldera is the remains of an older volcano which has blown its top off catastrophically) the circular depression in the centre of a volcano’s summit). The Sand sea caldera formed around 8,000 years ago, in what must have been a massive eruption. Subsequent volcanic activity formed the cluster of cinder cones in the caldera’s centre, including Bromo. The volcano in the background – also with an eruption plume – is Semeru, which erupts every 15 mins (approx).

The historical record indicates eruptions of Bromo every few years since 1804, and geologic evidence indicates eruptions at least several hundred years earlier. The most recent eruption occurred in 2004, and tragically killed two tourists.

Java is one of the most densely populated regions on Earth, it is also one of the most volcanically active. The island is basically a line of volcanoes which have coalesced. Java is the 13th largest island in the world and the fifth largest island of Indonesia.

Evelyn will be very disapponted that I actually took this shot standing on two legs ;-) – however, I did get to the vantage point by 4x4 (SUV for Americans). It is an old shot taken in 1997 using an EOS5 and Agfa 100asa film so the quality could be better – also visibility was pretty poor that year as a number of volcanoes were erupting - hence the haze - sorry.

Hi James, great landscape shot of this exotic location. I love the hazy warm hue, colours are fabulous. Even from a distance details on the volcano. Great POV.

Hi James

This is really breathtaking!
WOW! At first, i thought it was taken from a plane...then i read your notes and it suddenly seemed even more impressive!
What a view!
You really needn't appologize...for that kind of haze and distance, the result is impeccable!
The timing here was also fantastic and, besides the great smoke comming out of the crater, you also managed some pretty impressive shadows and highlights on those magnificent crests.

The sheer scale of this grand view makes it a great image, James. I love the play of light on those fluted sides of the conical volcanic mountains in the distance. The vantage point is really very important here.

Hi James,
Excellent landscape shot. The haze actually makes the shot more powerful. The smoke from the crater and the ragged mountain slopes with their light and shadow play make it wonderful. You had been to the top of the world it seems. Very nicely composed. Kudos.

I am not disappointed, especially not "VERY disappointed" as you said. Why should I be disappointed? I think everything you do is fascinating. It does seem like a high vantage point. With an eruption every 15 minutes I suspect few days are very clear. It is an interesting shot to be sure. It has an other world feel to it.
