A Dedication to Radu:
This post of the gorgeous bird-of-paradise is dedicated to Radu (Xplorator), a prince of a guy!
This summer, my family and I had the pleasure of meeting Radu in beautiful Bali. Purely on the strength of our TN friendship, he extended to us the warmest and most generous hospitality. Suksma, Radu. : )

Lesser Bird of Paradise
Paradisaea minor

The Lesser Bird of Paradise, Paradisaea minor is a medium-sized, up to 32cm-long, maroon-brown bird of paradise with a yellow crown and brownish-yellow upper back. The male has a dark emerald-green throat, a pair of long tail-wires and is adorned with ornamental flank plumes which are deep yellow at their base and fade outwards into white. The female is a maroon bird with a dark-brown head and whitish underparts.

Its closely resembles the Greater Bird of Paradise, but is smaller in size. The males are polygamous, and perform courtship displays in leks. The female usually lays two pinkish eggs with dark markings in a nest in a tree high above ground. Its diet consists mainly of fruits and insects.

The Lesser Bird of Paradise is distributed throughout the forests of Misool and Jobi Islands of West Papua and northern New Guinea.

Carolus Linnaeus named the species Paradisaea apoda, or "legless bird of paradise", because early trade-skins to reach Europe were prepared without feet by natives; this lead to the misconception that these birds were beautiful visitors from paradise that floated in the air and never touched the earth until death.

This photo was taken at the Bali Bird Park.

hello Manyee,
when the nature enchants .... excellent catch and details..thanks to the vision

best regards sERGIO

Hi Manyee,
wow what a dynamic and colourful photo you have graced TN with today, outstanding!I do not believe I have ever seen a bird such as this one before now,let alone one that has a maroon colouration to it's plumage. Those yellow plumes are a wonder too and those flanking it's head are ,well, very feathery and fine looking with the details you have captured.A well focused and clear image with great colour and fine details,I like it.You have some of the bird cut off and was that how it was taken or did you crop it that way? No matter really and thank you for sharing this one with us. Bob

Hi Manyee

Beautiful capyure with great detail and pose. I have seen this species in the Jurong Bird Park, and fleetingly in the wild in PNG, this time last year.

Oh Manyee, this bird looks like a couple of feathery fans. What a beauty it is. And it looks like it is showing off at you and spreading his feathers out in greeting.
It's a brilliant shot
Thank you

Hi ManYee

A wonderful capture of this amazing Bird-of-Paradise. Lovely details in the plumage, stunning colours and great use of the fill-in flash gave this shot a visual edge. These birds have amazing routines to try and impress the female BOP's and you were very fortunate to catch this one while going through his dance routine.

Well done and TFS.

Loot

PS. So more feedback on the holiday would be well appreciated and enjoyed. Say "Hi" to the big guy too.

Hi Manyee!

It must be a pleasure to visit this park! The colours of the bird are superb, although the picture has been taken with a flash. I also like the position of its feathers and the composition with the branch in the diagonal is fine, too. Moreover, your notes are very interesting and instructive.

Kind regards

Markus

Thank you! In the words of Wayne's World "In nooot wooorthy!"
There are millions of quotes of friendship but I only remember one by Dickens: "Friendship? Yes, please!".
You guys were too much fun, I should thank you.
P.S. Stunning pose on the "cenderawasih" (this is how we call this bird around here), she was probably watching Romanian gymnastics at the time.

Hello Manyee,

An outstanding capture with amazing colors & detail. Extremely well done & TFS.

Regards

Umar

I love this composition with the strong diagonal and spiraling curve. Really nice. Colors and exposure look natural.

I like the new intro photo.
