Pemiere? Yes!
As far as I know, this is the first and only published picture of a live specimen of this butterfly species, Lohora transiens (Nymphalidae, Satyrinae).
The genus Lohora includes altogether 17 species which are found exclusively in the Sulawesi region (Indonesia). On neighbouring islands, members of the closely related and species-rich genus Mycalesis occur, which are in most cases not so colourful as the “Lohoras” and do not posses such imposing big ‘eyes’ on the underside of the wings.
Lohora species love the shadow and are found in the understory of the tropical forest. They share their habitat with a similar looking species of the Amathusiinae, Faunis menado, which is no close relative to Lohora transiens but possesses similar wing markings and is also similar in its flying behaviour.
The butterfly shown here is a female of Lohora transiens (wing span is about 55 mm) which I found on the south east peninsula, Sulawesi Tenggara. When you meet the right location, specimens of transiens are not uncommon so that it is possible to study them in more detail. For many of the tropical insect species, in particular those which are small and not so colourful, often only the name and limited data on the distribution are known. This is also true for the species of the genus Lohora. It was possible for me to examine also the larval development of L. transiens. I will check the quality of the pictures I made and hope to find some suitable ones for TrekNature. The larval stages were not known – up to now.
Pictures of pinned museum specimens, not of live ones, can be found in two books:
- D’Abrera B. (1984) Butterflies of the Oritenal Region. Part II, Nymphalidae, Satyridae & Amathusiidae. – Hill House, Melbourne.
- Aoki T., Yamaguchi S and Uémura Y (1982) Butterflies of the South East Asian Islands. Vol. III, Satyridae, Libytheidae. – Plapac Co., Ltd. |

Very good photo of this butterfly!
Good on colours and POV!
Very good DOF and details too!
5* and TFS!
Hi Peter,
congratulations for that rare kind of Premiere!
Exciting to have new contributions like that on TN.
For a scanned colour slide or print of 1999 the quality is good both on resolution and colours, but it might be further improved by some postwork with a little bit of cleaning and selective sharpening. I know what a great deal of work it is to treat a scan to compete well among other digitally presented images taken with digital equipment. So thank you again for sharing this rare shot with us!
Best regards,
Peter
PS: Tried a little workshop to test the above postwork suggestions. Hope you enjoy, Peter.
