Late Autumn is a beautiful time for changing leaves on trees, but less than the ideal time for butterfly watching. However, I have just got back from a trip that included a few pleasant surprises, so I will post some Japanese photos here over the next few weeks.
First out of the hat is this study of Polygonia c-aureum (Linnaeus 1758).

Cropped, resized and sharpened in CS3, using USM at settings of 100/0.6/0

Some general information on this species is available from the "Guide to the BUTTERFLIES OF RUSSIA and adjacent territories Volume 2. PENSOFT, Sofia - Moscow. 2000".

A web summary includes the following:
•SYNONYM: angelica (Cramer, 1782).
• RANGE. Amur and Ussuri regions; NW. China, Korea, Japan.
•DISTRIBUTION AND VARIATION. This species has two seasonal, superficially different forms, summer and autumnal. The latter has been described as pryeri Janson, 1878.
•HABITATS AND BIOLOGY. Open places in broadleaved forest. Flight period: May to September, in two generations. Host plants in Japan (Fukuda et al., 1984): Humnlopsis scandens and Canncibis saliva; in the Ussuri region (Dantchenko & Nikolaevsky, in press): Humulopsis cordtfolius. Oviposition solitarily on leaves and buds. Each larva building a nest from a leaf. Hibernation imaginal.
•SIMILAR SPECIES. Polygonia c-album: UPF without blue spots.

Ciao Alan,
complimenti per questa ottima foto.
L'ottima messa a fuoco permette di apprezzare in tutta la sua bellezza il disegno delle ali e le macchie blu, che spiccano soprattutto nelle ali posteriori.

Hi Alan.
It is a clear and pleasant capture of this butterfly.
Nice colour saturation, POV and details.
Thanks, Felipe.

Hello Alan,
a splendid and brilliant picture of c-aureum. Wing shape, colours and colour patterns of the butterfly are well presented. Very good contrast against the background.
Best wishes, Peter

hello Alan,
You seem to have seen extraordinary things in Japan! To begin with this beautiful butterfly. It really looks great with the tiny blue spots, the European one doesn't have. Great.
Many thanks

Hello Alan,
This is a fine capture of this Far Eastern Comma. Nice wing display with pretty good sharpness and set in a pleasing composition against a natural BG.
Well done and thanks for sharing this one,

Hi Alan,
Very beautiful butterfly and you have captured it wonderfully well. Very impressive sharpness and bright colours and I like the shape of its wings. The BG looks fine too and presents a contrasting base to let the butterfly stand out perfectly. Good lighting and exposure and the DOF is precise. Excellent POV and composition. Kudos.

hi alan,
excellent picture. good dof. the wing shape is cleary captured. tfs.
