Banded Kingfisher
(Lacedo pulchella)
Size: 23 cm
Location: Panti Forest (Johor)

Female has black bars on it chest and brown upper-parts. A unique bird; the only member of its own genus.

A long series of whistled chi-wiu.

A peculiar kingfisher that is restricted to closed forest. Inhabits primary forest and mature secondary rainforest, from the lowlands to lower montane elevations. Not associated with water. Usually located by call and often seen sitting lethargically in the middle storey below the canopy for long periods. It hunts for insects in the forest.

Southeast Asia. A generally scarce resident in Sumatra, Kalimantan and Java but extinct in Singapore.
