Rufous-Backed Kingfisher
(Ceyx rufidorsa)
Size: 14 cm
Location: Ulu Langat/Panti Forest Reserve (Kuala Lumpur/Johor-Malaysia)

Distinguished from Black-Backed Kingfisher by its paler wings; also note lack of black spot behind ear. Sometimes it included in Black-Backed Kingfisher as hybridization does occurs.

Whistling chi-chip call.

Strictly a forest bird, only occurring within primary and mature secondary rainforest in the lowlands. Shy; perches low. Itís usually seen flying low across the forest trail, like a tiny orange projectile, often near a small stream. The nest is built in a cavity in low earth embarkments.

A scarce resident in South Thailand, Malaysia and Brunei but extinct in Singapore.
