| This is an up-close image of an Indian Walkman, also known as a Devil's Scorpion Fish. This was taken in the Perentian Islands in Malaysia. This species is found throughout the Indian Ocean, and reportedly, as far East as the Philippines. Scorpion fish inhabit the sandy bottoms of coral reefs and have an amazing ability to blend in to their surroundings. They are not aggressive, but if provoked, they will elevate their dorsal spines, which contain a potent venom that is one of the most deadly fish neurotoxins. For protection they will burry themselves in substrate with only their dorsal fins and eyes protruding from the rubble. Scorpion fish feed on crustaceans, cephalopods, and other fish by employing a sit-and-wait approach, quickly engulfing their prey as they move by. |
