Thanks to Razvan who give me the benefit of identifying the bird. I think he is right. Initially I identified it s Common Redshank.

Correct me if Im wrong as Im not very good in identifying the bird as my knowledge about it is so little.In identifying, the possibilities of having it as sandpiper can also happen. I noticed only the neck has a difference!
My experience photographing it is quite interesting. first of all it will disappear the moment you approach it. It just simply sneaked into the green dense padi plants.
So my trick trick is from the car. I drove slowly along a one lane dirt road. Upon noticing it I dove at a distance where the bird could not suspect human face.
I stopped for a minute without doing anything. Then I unwind the side door slowly and waited for a few seconds. Then I shot it with the camera inside the car.
Even with that a minute or so it will realise something fishy, and disappeared into the padi fields.
Maybe laughing at me.

The Wood Sandpiper, Tringa glareola, is a small wader. This Eurasian species is the smallest of the shanks, which are mid-sized long-legged waders of the family Scolopacidae.

It resembles a longer-legged and more delicate Green (T. ochropus) or Solitary Sandpiper (T. solitaria) with a short fine bill, brown back and longer yellowish legs. It differs from the first of those species in a smaller and less contrasting white rump patch, while the Solitary Sandpiper nas no white rump patch at all.
However, it is not very closely related to these two species. Rather, its closest relative is the Common Redshank (T. totanus), and these two share a sister relationship with the Marsh Sandpiper (T. stagnatilis). These three species are a group of smallish shanks with red or yellowish legs, a breeding plumage that is generally subdued light brown above with some darker mottling and with a pattern of somewhat diffuse small brownish spots on the breast and neck.


The Wood Sandpiper breeds in subarctic wetlands from the Scottish Highlands across Europe and Asia. They migrate to Africa and southern Asia, particularly India. Vargant birds have been seen as far into the Pacific as the Hawaiian Islands. In Micronesia it is a regular visitor to the Marianas Islands (where flocks of up to 32 birds are reported) and Palau; it is recorded on Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands about once per decade. This species is encountered in the western Pacific region between mid-October and mid-May

This bird is usually found on fresh water during migration and wintering. They forage by probing in shallow water or on wet mud, and mainly eat insects and similar small prey. T. glareola nests on the ground or uses an abandoned old tree nest of another bird, such as the Fieldfare (Turdus pilaris)

Nice capture of this wader. For me looks like a Wood Sandpiper (Tringa glareola). I don't know if this specie is present in that area, but I'm sure it is not Redshank.
May be is somebody who can help us.

Hi Foozi,

A lovely Sandpiper peeking through the reeds. His face, eye, beak and plumage are so clear and sharp. Nice colors and details of the entire bird. I love the reflections in the water, the marvelous setting and the fine composition.

it is a beautiful bird , and a nice photo , I like the natural environment , nice light , and a fair detail , the composition is ok , but in my opinion the reflection is not working here , perhaps a crop to exclude more of it? , or capturing all of it , but half is a bit of distraction , reason I notice that is because I recently did the same :-( got a nice photo but chopped the birds reflection , and was kind of sad that I had not thought of it when I took the picture...

Hi Foozi,

Very nice capture of that sandpiper! You caught him in a terrific location! It's hard to get a more natural looking environment than that. Great colours and details. I love the bright green grass all around the bird. I read your informative notes. You said that Razvan had identified the bird as a Wood Sandpiper. He's probably correct. As you've pointed out, the species looks similar to the Solitary Sandpiper, found in North and South America and the Caribbean. I enjoyed reading about your photo technique too. TFS.
