[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Can anyone help with an identification of this Nepalese beetle? Habitat was forest in the Kathmandu Valley, not especially high elevation.

Another old shot scannned from my slide archives, and which I hope eventually to be able to properlly identify. Its just not possible to have enough reference books to cover all insects in all regions of the world.

Thanks in advance.

And now thanks in arrears to Peter Roos, Batu, for suggesting Cantao ocellatus. This looks to be a good, or very close, determination. There are some interesting pictures of this species, including some early stages here. It seems that the amont of black in the cream dorsal spotting is quite variable and the females are probably very pale.

Hello Alan,
What a beautiful bright bug this is! Amazing sharpness and colours for such an old and scanned image! I wonder what camera you had then? I like the green natural background too but somehow fell I'd like to turn it left.
Many thanks and regards, Ulla

Hello Alan,
obviously, your collection harbours a wealth of exotic insects rarely or not at all posted to TN.
This bug is well shown and you demonstrate the nice colour pattern of the insect with great clarity.
I think, that your picture shows
- Cantao ocellatus
- family: Scutelleridae
Best wishes, Peter

Hi Alan
This is a nice sharp macro of your colourful insect. As far as insects go, this one has unique colour.
