Saturnia pavonia (Saturniidae).

This is for Chris Jonko (Christopher_PL).

My walk was almost over, and I was feeling rather down, my good old SB-28 flash has finally expired after 7 years on heavy duty (there's still hope of revival, though). And, just as a kind of consolation, I suddenly spotted these at the edge of the railroad on a hummock amidst dry grass. Late afternoon commuter trains went by as I examined the female clinging to a twig. Only then I discovered there were two of them. I thought they were mating, but they were not, the female's abdomen was bulging with eggs, so the guy was simply attracted to her smell and left soon.
Knowing that very few time had left for her, I brought the female home and watched as she started to lay eggs. So soon I'll be a proud breeder of these beauties again, to release fully-grown caterpillars in suitable locations.
By the way, I've counted the eggs: there's 182 of them in groups of 14 to 45.

Hello Dmitry!
This is really great documentary shot! Not only because to photographed 2 specimens of this beauty and rather uncommon (in Poland rare) species, but also because of their different colouration!
I like also a note :)
