Purple-Backed Starling (Daurian Starling)
(Sturnus sturnius)
Size: 19 cm

Description:
The purple-backed starling has a pale grey head, nape and under-parts, a purplish black patch on the hind crown, a purplish black mantle and glossy greenish black wings. It has a very short blackish tail and two whitish wing bars. Iris brown. Legs and toes horny, tinged with green. Sexes alike. Female has a slightly dull coloured.

Voice:
Typical harsh starling whistling and whickering notes.

Habits:
It mainly occur in wooded area and seldom seen them in gardens or parks. They usually occur in flocks of 20 – 30 and never seen alone. It feeds on fruits, berries, nectar and insects.

Distribution:
Very common winter resident throughout the wooded area in the island.
