Asian Golden Weaver
(Ploceus hypoxanthus)
Size: 15 cm
Description:
The beautiful golden plumage of the male is unmistakable. Female distinguished with difficulty from the Streaked Weaver and Baya Weaver by massive bill, very thick at base.
Voice:
Like the Streaked Weaver.
Habits:
Found in lowland freshwater marshes, rivers and lakes with tall grasses and nearby wet paddy fields. Behaviour and nesting habits much like the Streaked Weaver. A low-density species which does not occur in any great number within its small range. Seems to be declincing in numbers and is now regarded as near threatened with global extinction.
Distribution:
Very rare resident breeder and escapee in Singapore. |
