White-Rumped Shama

Size: 25 cm

A very long-tailed, black and orange chat with a large, white black patch. Black tail graduated and edged with white. Maleís deep orange from the lower breast to vent while femaleís paler and greyer above. Itís frequently cocks its tail.

A harsh chrrr call. Itís very rich song often with mimicry.

Inhabits the dense undergrowth of the forests, favouring bamboo. Itís usually feed on invertebrates that are near to the ground. Itís a rather secretive bird except when in territorial display. Itís best located by frequent crepuscular singing. It nests low down.

Rare resident and breeder on the main island.
