Rufous Woodpecker
(Celeus brachyurus) 栗啄木鸟
Size: 25 cm
Description:
A medium-sized, rufous-coloured woodpecker with a short crest and short black bill. The upper-parts are finely barred black. Male has small red patches by eyes.
Voice:
Loud, high-pitched ke ke kre ke. Also a distinctive staggered drumming.
Habits:
Inhabits upland broadleaf forests. It feeds mainly on ball-like tree ant nests but also on ground. It also feed on figs. They are often in loose groups. It excavates nest chamber inside the active ant nests without apparently being bothered by the stinging ants.
Distribution:
An uncommon resident and breeder throughout the island. |
