Blue-Eared Kingfisher
(Alcedo meninting) 蓝耳翠鸟
Size: 13 cm

Distinguished with some difficulty from common kingfisher by its lack of rufous ear coverts, darker blue head and wings and darker rufous under-parts.

Similar to common kingfisher, but shorter and even more high-pitched.

Prefer a more wooded habitat than the common kingfisher. Is usually seen at rivers and pools inside forest and sometimes near cultivation, but never in open country. It is a low-density species not numerous anywhere. Sits on a low perch near the water and flies down to catch small fish and invertebrates. Quite shy; it takes off rapid flight low across the water when disturbed.

Rare resident breeder and winter visitors in Singapore.
