Dollarbird
(Eurystomus orientalis) 三宝鸟
Size: 30 cm

Description:
Medium-sized, appears blackish in poor light; but upon closer inspection: blue-green plumage; brownish head; blackish cap; blackish upper tail and flight feathers; bill large, stubby, orange; feet red; iris yellow.
Juvenileís bill brown, duller, "dollar" not so well defined.

Voice:
Described as a harsh single kack at rest and in flight and sometimes 3-5 loud kack-kak-kak or kek-ek-ek. Two birds sitting side-by-side sometimes clatter away like castanets.

Habits:
Inhabits forest edges and clearings, also nearby cultivation. Perches high on trees on bare branches from where it launches itself to catch large flying insects. Itís crepuscular and sociable, groups often hunting after dusk. It frequently overlooked. It nests in tree hole.

Distribution:
Common resident breeder and winter visitor throughout the island and North and South offshore islands.

Hi Ang,

Nice image of two Dollarbird with useful note.

I have done cropping and sharpening to make this image more presenting.

I will post it tomorrow for workshop.
