White-Crested Laughingthrush
(Garrulax leucolophus)
Size: 30 cm

Unmistakable; no other Garrulax babbler has a similar striking head pattern.

A noisy, melodious, laughing call.

Found in a variety of wooded habitats, from forest to secondary growth and bamboo tickets in lowlands, up to lower mountain elevations at 1,200 m. Always move around in small flocks, jumping and flying with long glides through the lower and middle storeys. Often drop down to the ground to feed. When several birds start calling in chorus, the racket is deafening.

Itís a widespread and locally common resident and breeder on much of the mainland; fairly common in Singapore (introduced).
