Thanks Manyee for the ID. I checked it up, it is a Cape Shelduck!

DESCRIPTION: The Cape shelduck has a gray head and neck with a buff breast. The rest of the body is chestnut red.

SIZE: 37.5-60 cm (15-24 in.) in length; wingspan 87.5-125 cm (35-50 in.)

WEIGHT: 1.5-2.3 kg (3.3-4.9 lb)

DIET: Feeds on snails, mussels, frogs, earthworms, and insects

SEXUAL MATURITY: Approximately 2-3 years

In the wild, these ducks may use holes and burrows made by other animals to build their nest.

Shelducks are not diving birds, but they are able to dive if needed. The young ducklings dive freely but the adults only do so when wounded or frightened.

Jokes time:

A man and a duck are walking down the street together. Suddenly the man notices a low flying airplane coming right for them. So the man yells DUCK!!!! and the duck yells back at the man with an angry face MAN!!!!

A duck walks into a bar and asks "got any crackers?" bartender says no. Duck walks out. Duck walks in the next day and asks, "got any crackers?" bar tender says no. Duck walks out. Duck walks in the next day and asks got any crackers? Bartender says, "I told you yesterday and the day before that no! and if you ask that one more time I'll nail your beak shut!" Duck walks out. Duck comes back the next day and asks, "got any nails?" bartender says no. Duck says "good. Got any crackers?"

A duck walks into a bar. He looks like the happiest duck in the world. The bartender asks, "Why are you so happy today?"
The duck replies, "I've been playing in puddles all day." The duck proceeds to order a beer and enjoy it at the bar.

A little while later another duck walks in the bar. He looks like the second happiest duck in the world. The bartender asks, "Why are you so happy today?"

The duck gives the bartender the same answer, "I've been playing in puddles all day." This duck also orders a beer and enjoys it at the bar.

A third duck enters the bar, the total opposite of the first two ducks. He looks like the saddest duck in the world. The bartender asks the duck, "What's wrong with you?"

The duck replies, "My name is Puddles and I've had a terrible day."

Er.. laugh please. :)

This is really a beautiful shot. I love the natural color and the wonderful feather textures. Very nice.

So here is my TRUE duck story. My husband and I have a tandem bicycle. He rides in front blocking my view. He knows how I love ducks. So we are taking a long ride along the river and ponds and he calls out "duck" when there is one for me to see. After quite a few of these I was enjoying seeing all the ducks along our route. So he says again "duck" and I look from left to right to find the bird only to get hit in the face with the branch I was supposed to "duck" out of the way of!! : )

Hi Steph,
I think this is some kind of shelduck, maybe a Cape shelduck.
But I am not sure, so you have to do some more research.
Anyway that is a great shot, I like the pose. He seems to be smiling.
The details are very sharp, and the exposure is very good.
Great POV.
TFS. : )

Hi Steph

Nice shot -with lovely colours and good DOF. I must admit I went running to my bird books as I didn't think the ID was right - In the UK (& in Newmans, the Southern Africa bird 'bible') it is called the South African Shelduck - but the Cape of Good Hope) is in South Africa, so I expect it is just another common name. In any even it is Tadorna Cana.

Hello Stephanie,
Nice and sweet portrait of this pretty duck. It really looks very happy, may be it was the first one of your joke :-)! I like the fact that the picture is not too sharp, it gives something smooth and nice to the picture.

Very nice closeup. I really like how you got down low to get to his eye level. The beak and eye are very sharp and lots of details. He looks as if he is talking. :) Great capture.
