Hi Darren & welcome here on TN as well. And you start of with a nice creepy crawly too. Looks a bit like wolf spider to me, but I'm not the expert. You can bite - hold it in your mouth - the maglite and have more control where you point it, like on the eyes. A bit more difficult, but better results on the focus. This is nice on the black BG, but the cut-off feet is a bit on the downside. This is something you can easily fix in PS, you know it better than me.

Your newest neighbor? I would move. Seriously, though, this is a neat shot with good exposure and sharpness. What kind of spider is it, do you know? Incidently, if I lived there, I'd be a crazy westerner, too! Some people in the US must think me crazy when they see me setting up shots.

Check that man with the table and the spider... I can imagine ;)
Anyway the result was worth the effort. Lovely detail and the light handled very well. Spiders are my favourite I will add this one to the theme. Pity about the 2 legs just out of focus. But you did he night shot very well. Great work.

Great stuff Darren, I like these shots. It isn't a wolf spider, it is most likely from Araneidae, well that is where I would start.
Good first post and welcome to TN
points tomorrow

Welcome to TN and this is a great first post. Your focus is on the body of the spider leaving the right front legs a bit soft. The detail on the rest is excellent. I will leave it up to Callie to stick it in his mouth! Excellent work and I hope we see lots more of your work.

Welcome on TN Darren. Great first post of this hairy lady. Very well use of limited dof to get the focus on the body and the head and letting the legs drop out of focus. I don't know the ID of this one but I don't think it is a wolf spider as the don't catch their prey in a web - they run them up - and this one seems to sit in a usual web.
Never mind the ID - I like the picture very much.

Darren, This looks like the same spider I posted a few days ago. I also shot at midnight, another coincidence. I also had to use a flashlght to assist AF, but instead shot the spider with the light of the maglight from a distance. When I saw your post, I'd hoped you had found the species. I find that searching the internet for indentification can be a real chore!

You have put that macro to good use here. I wonder what kind of spider it is. Good clarity you've got with the black background. You did well with the uncentered lighting. Excellent exposure

Darren - I must congratulate you on this one. It's a great macro, even if the front legs are out of focus.
Highly commended for all your efforts to achieive this. Well done.
Nice to see you here too.

Deliciously SCARY!
Technically, it would have helped the DOF to open the diaphragm (really closed tight in your case). Could you have done it ?
I love the totally black background (blackground). Too bad the front legs are out of focus.
Thanks for the hints given in your note on how you resolved this difficult shot.
