I found this group of egrets on abandon rice field while on the way to Ayudhya yesterday. Not able to identify the exact species yet. Also the picture may not as good but want to share with you all.

4 Dec 2006
Thanks SkyF(Sky Fa) and fragman (Ori Fragman Sapir)in helping ID this bird.

Family: Ciconiidae

Genus: Anastomus

Species: Anastomus oscitans

Common Name: Asian openbill stork

Head-Body Length: It is relatively small for a stork at 68cm length.

Identification: The Asian openbill is generally white or grayish-white. Its flight feathers and tail are black, and the legs are dull pink. The mandibles do not meet except at the tip, and this gives rise to the species' name.

Breeding adults are all white except for the black wing flight feathers. Non-breeding adults have the white of the plumage replaced by off-white. Young birds have brown tinge to the plumage.

Like all storks, it flies with its neck outstretched, walks slowly and steadily on the ground, feeding on molluscs, frogs and large insects.

Reproduction: The exact breeding season of these colonial nesters depends on where the population is located. Northern birds nest from July to September while southern populations nest from November to March. Each pair has 2-4 eggs.

Hi Jitti,
I'd like to find this beautiful birds when I go to work too! Lovely soft colors and good details.
TFS, José M.

The picture is quite good, JC. You have shown the birds busy with their usual routine and they seem to be unaware of your presence.
It is interesting to see how the angle of light determines the colour and tone of two different levels of water within the same frame.
Well done and TFS.

Hello Jitti,
I don't know much about those birds but they look to me like being a kind of stroke but I think that you already got your answer... This is a very nice capture of those wild birds and you caught nice pose and had a good timing to see them. If it would happened to me I would have been much impressed as those birds seem so big... Nice one and TFS,

Hello JC,
A beautiful composition, and I appreciate the distorted reflections!
