During my time in Belize we found the Banded Peacock (Anartia fatima) to be common everywhere we went. We also saw regularly in western Costa Rica.

The species has a distribution from Panama through all of Central America to northern Mexico, with occasional irruptions into Texas. They have a wingspan of 7cm and are found in pastureland, disturbed forest, gardens and weedy areas.

This one was taken near Sam Tillets hotel where we stayed at Crooked Tree. Great food and hospitality in their open-air restaurant, birds and butterflies everywhere.

Hi Chris
I have seen this kind of butterfly on Belize but didn't made any shots. It was many different insects... but I am always looking for the birds :)
Nice pose, details and colours on this one.

What a pretty butterfly!
Razor-sharp image with great detail and clarity.
Very pretty colours, shadow-less lighting and perfect exposure!
Great composition and POV.
The shallow DOF works really well here!
Nice BG as well.
Thanks for sharing this Chris :)

Hi Chris,
Beautiful butterfly. The red markings must be the distinctive feature of this Banded Peacock. Lovely pov and composition.

Hi Chris.
Excellent butterfly picture. Posture and wingspread of the beautiful butterfly are amazing as well as the sharpness of its image and colour reproduction. Shot is composed perfectly. BG is blurred very well and wonderful too. Perfect job and TFS.

Hi Chris,
I remember these from Belize in the late 70s. Very reminiscent. You have presented the butterfly with great clarity and composition. Thanks.
