This is another butterfly I found on a Lantana bush at Hotel Buena Vista, Costa Rica in September. I was surprised by the variety of species I saw that morning. What a delight for this eager photographer!

Thank you Ivan, Jose Roberto, and Peter for your help with ID. I know so little about butterfly species but am learning bit by bit as I view all your wonderful images and notes here on TN and then also go diving for info on my own.

Family: Riodinidae
Genus: Melanis
Specie: Pixie
Subspecie of Costa Rica: Sanguinea

Upon further reaserch I found a common name of a very similar butterfly, Red-bordered Pixie

Thanks for taking a look and sharing your thoughts.
I appreciate it.

Hello Richard,
I have been able to look this up in my books and found that this is a Nemeoniid butterfly, Lymnas pixe.
Excellent colours, sharpness, composition with the lantana and fine POV.
Well done and TFS!

Hi Richard

Lovely shot - beautiful detail and colours and excellent POV.

Hello Richard,
Great shot!
Wonderful butterfly with magnicifent colors!
Excellent POV and sharpness.
Pleasant composition, very well detailed.
I believe that is a Melanis pixe (family Riodinidae).
Regards,
Josť Roberto

Hi Richard,
I love this picture. Black butterflies are hard to shoot because of the exposure. But you succeeded marvelously to render the velvety pitchblack surface! And what glorious colours. Only b minor for me is the background flower that draws too much attention. I propose a workshop version. See whether you like it. Thanks for presenting the pic!
Best regards
Dietrich

Hello Richard,
a nice capture of this colourful Riodinidae, which however only slightly contrasts to the flowers with nearly identical coloration. I see that Ivan and Josť identified the species already. The actual genus name is Melanis, the species name is pixie (with 2 i). There are several subspecies in the neotropical region. That of Costa Rica is called Melanis pixie sanguinea. I recommend the book of Philip de Vries (1997) The Butterflies of Costa Rica and their Natural History, Vol. II Riodinidae (Princeton University Press, New Jersey).
Best wishes, Peter

Hi Richard,
This is a very impressive picture!
All the colour seen all over makes of this a very "energetic" image to look at.
You managd pretty well the exposure to keep lights and shadows under control.
Congratulations and thanks for share it.
My best regards,
JM

Very nice lighting and exposure. Your exposed this superbly becaus it looks like the lighting was very bright and you were right on the verge of clipping on the flowers but didn't and the butterfly is perfectly exposed. Very masterful work with exposure here.

Hello Richard,
This is such a colorful post! You caught superb details on an amazing specie that I don't think I have seen before. Composition, POV and exposure are superb and you managed well with this black color. Well seen and well done! Thanks,
Claudine

Wow...is that saturated or what? Lots of colours for the season....well not for summer but almost as a dream of colour...very nice.

Hi Richard.
Terrific shot, which overfilled by amazing objects and colours. The pictured butterfly is wonderful at high range, The scenery (flowers and leaves) are so fine. Your POV, wingspread of the butterfly are superb as well as the DOF, sharpness of the main subject and blurriness of the BG. Shot is composed perfectly and diagonal structure of the picture is excellent. Bravo and best regards.

Hello Richard, WOW, colours are great! good details, nice angle and dof. Tfs, rgds, Necip

Hi Richard,
Isn't that the beauty of this site. So many people are able to help you learn about nature. Like you, I know very little about butterflies, but there are enough experts that are willing to help within a second. They only thing we you need to do is to photograph them. And you did do a great job on this one. The details are perfectly captured and the DOF isolated it excellently. I like the bright colors, especially during these dark days of winter.
TFS,
Niek

Nice colourful shot. Good composition and POV. And thanks for your comments, but I think I will repost my sunset picture again tomorrow with horizontal bordering to make it more panaromic.
