This worn Dryas Julia on the Lantana flower is my third butterfly specie posting from my Sept. journey to Costa Rica.

Dryas julia (also spelled iulia), is commonly called the Julia butterfly or Julia Heliconian.
The sole representative of its genus, the Julia is native from Brazil to southern Texas and Florida, and in summer can sometimes be found as far north as eastern Nebraska. Over 15 subspecies have been described.

Its wingspan ranges from 82 to 92 mm, and it is colored orange (brighter in male specimens) with black markings; this species is somewhat unpalatable to birds.

It feeds on the nectar of flowers including lantana and shepherd's needle (Scandix pecten-veneris), and its caterpillars form hosts in passion vines including Passiflora affinis and Passiflora lutea (the yellow passionvine) in Texas.

The Julia is a fast flier and frequents clearings, paths, and margins of forests and woodlands.

Family: Nymphalidae
Subfamily: Heliconiinae
Tribe: Heliconiini
Subtribe: Heliconiiti
Genus: Dryas
Species: D. julia

Hi Richard
Great vivid colors, good sharpness and DOF Nice diagonal composition and good OOF background I like it very much Great colorful summer shot :-)
Best wishes

I believe it was Anybone who introduced me to this one species...A very highly saturated image. I see where many in this bland season are pumping up the colours just a nudge. It may be subconscious move to recreate the memory of summer.

lovely colours
well composed
