Owl Butterfly

The owl butterfly is one of Amazonia's largest butterfly species. (See huge larva)
The large eyespots on the wings serve either to scare a potential predator or to misdirect an attack away from the body (since predators will often first attack the eyes of prospective prey, in this case the butterfly's wings).

Geographic Range: Occurs from sea level to 1400 m on the Pacific slope as a common species, but is much rarer on the Atlantic slope.

Host Plant (s): Heliconia (Heliconiaceae)

The Owl Butterfly feeds exclusively on fermenting fruit. It’s a habit which can result in the giant butterfly literally keeling over in a drunken stupor.

Manyee, this is very nice work. The details are sharp. the colors a bit vivid but I guess its the flash. Not a distraction though. Very well done.

Very nice butterfly shot Manyee. It reallu does look like it has an owl's eye on the wing, doesn't it? I love the detail on the wings but the red stem near the head is annoying. That's an awesome camera for macro!
