Anartia jatrophae
ssp. guantanamo (Munroe, 1942)

White Peacock
Family: Nymphalidae

Wing span: 58 – 74mm

A fragile looking, middle sized butterfly that can be met in Cuba in good numbers at any location from the sea shores to the sierras, at any time of the year. A wary and restless flyer during the hot parts of the day, A. jatrophae guantanamo is a distinctly territorial species that tends to fly short distances only and take short moments of rest in low vegetation. Best time to approach the butterfly for a close capture is the hour of sunset when it gets drowsy and starts looking for a place to spend the night in low vegetation - as here.

Lepidoptera: Rhopalocera. La Habana 1987/1999)

The “White Peacock” A. jatrophae is a neotropical species widely distributed over the South American continent, Central America, going north to Southern Texas, Florida, Cuba (ssp. guantanamo). Its caterpillars are feeding on various plants such as Acanthaceae: Blechum pyramidatum, Justicia, Ruellia occidentalis, Ruellia tuberosa, Strobilanthes; Euphorbiaceae: Manihot esculenta; Labiatae: Melissa officinalis, Mentha pulegium; but not on Jatropha as the scientific name might suggest. Bonjour Peter

Hallo Peter
It is great to see a posting from you after such a looooooooong time of absence from the site, and what a beauty this White Peacock is. The details and colours of the markings is such a delight to look at and admire, the centralized composition just right, background tops. What more can one say? It was a pleasure to look at a master’s work after such a long time. You made my day with this delightful, soft coloured butterfly posting. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.

The glows and the shine from the special light makes this composition of your extra brilliance.

Hello Peter,
A superb capture of a nice fresh specimen of A. jatrophae taken up to your usual high standards both technically and esthetically. You made good use of the relatively low lighting.
I have seen this species in Trinidad, where it is known as the Bisquit and I took a poor shot of it long before digital photography.
So it is extra nice to view this!
Thanks and kind regards,

Lieber Peter,

Hello Peter
good point of view on this Nymphalidae with great sharpness and good details. Excellent focusing and light management. Very interesting notes.

Hello Peter,

I just photographied this species last year during my holidays in Dominican Republic. My picture is not as good as yours (and far of approaching it). You can see it here:

I'm really happy to see its wonderful colors on your pic. Even if the bg is a little bit cubbersome, the butterfly has sufficient presence to help us forget it.

Exposition is so well mastered!!!! I read that the males defends a little territory where the host plants for the caterpillar reside. So it protects also the food for the youngs!!!

TFS my friend and have a good day!

ciao Peter!
,vicino a te.....

Hi, Peter.
Simply splendid individual of the species. Fantastic exactness of reproduction of all features of the butterfly and surroundings. Texture, colouration, shapes are reflected superbly. Composition as well as POV are spot on too. Bravo. Great job.

Hallo Peter,

Well composed closeup frame Peter, the colors & details look very good.
Interesting light, well done! :)
