We headed over the border into Guatemala and main goal of my return to Central America, the Mayan ruins of Tikal. As well as the simply amazing ruins of this lost city, the surrounding national park is packed with wildlife.

One of the most gaudy residents is the Ocellated Turkey (Meleagris ocellata) aspecies I first saw here on TN when Ralf Lukovic (ralfsworld) posted a shot back in 2007, it was a species I just to go and see for myself.

This species is restricted to the Yucatan Peninsula region that covers south-eastern Mexico, northern Belize and north-eastern Guatemala. In Tikal they have become relatively tame around the camping area and groups of up to 20 strut around the place as if they own it.

Ocellated Turkey are a large bird, with males reaching 5 to 6 kg in weight. They stand half a metre high and grow to 1.2 m long. They do not gobble like their North American relative, but utter a series of 6 or 7 bass-like notes in quick succession. They live in rainforest, where they feed on fallen fruits and insects. Note the 6cm long spur on the legs, an impressive weapon.

Hallo Chris
Unbelievable that one bird can be jam packed with such a lot of colour and detail. I am sure all that feathers weighs a ton and a half. Wow, but it indeed a beautiful spread of colours. It is almost as if one is looking at an artist's palette filled with a rainbow of colours. The detail on this birds head is stunning, and it looks like it is wearing a crown of some sort. An impressive image filled with great details that are well focused, super sharp and well seen. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.

Hi Chris!

This must be amazing place for over of nature and ancient civilisations. I read many books about this area and I hope I'll see it some day. Turkey looks slightly weird for me - it's just too colorfull :-) Looks like living piece of modern tribal art :-)

Ciao Chris, splendid bird with fantastic colors, excellent details, very well done, ciao Silvio

Spectacular species, what can I say!
Excellent colour and focus considering the bird seems to be standing in the shadow of a tree or building. A "nature book" type shot.
